    The 2017 Emerging Artist Award winners are Christi Birchfield, a visual artist specializing in printmaking and manager of Zygote Press’ Ink House in Waterloo, and writer Kevin Keating, whose work includes two novels and many essays and short stories. Birchfield studied printmaking at the Cleveland Institute of Art before earning her MFA in printmaking from Columbia University School of the Arts in New York. Currently teaching at Baldwin Wallace University, Keating studied at Cleveland State University and Columbia College in Chicago, and is currently working on another degree from Southern New Hampshire University. -Josh Usmani

    Individual Excellence Awards are peer recognition of creative artists for the exceptional merit of a body of their work that advances or exemplifies the discipline and the larger artistic community. These awards support artists' growth and development and recognize their work in Ohio and beyond. During this funding cycle, applications in crafts, design arts and illustration, interdisciplinary and performance art, media arts, photography, two-dimensional visual arts, and three-dimensional visual arts were accepted.

    Creative Workforce Fellowship Recipient:Forty artists receive $15K grants funded through Cuyahoga County cigarette tax

    CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Community Partnership for Arts and Culture announced Friday that it has awarded 40 fellowships to individual artists funded by Cuyahoga County's cigarette tax for the arts.

    The $600,000 in fellowships, each of which amounts to $15,000, represent a facet of the arts funding renewed for a second decade through 2026 by voters in the landslide victory for Issue 8 on November 3.

    The artists, working in craft, dance, design, literature, media arts, music, theatre and visual arts will each receive the grants in 2016 through the county's Creative Workforce Fellowship, which is administered by the nonprofit Community Partnership for Arts and Culture.

    Winners include artist and Comix creator Derf Backderf, printmaker Christi Birchfield, performance artist Jimmy Kuehnle, and poet Mary Robles.

    I am honored to have taken part in a printmaking portfolio titled Near Mint organized by Noah Breuer and Breanne Trammell. 
    Near Mint will open at Land Gallery on Friday, April 1st in relation to the Southern Graphics Council printmaking conference, hosted by PSU, PNCA, OCAC, and PCC in Portland, OR..
    Near Mint will also be on-view at Portland State University School of Art + Design's Open House on Wednesday, March 30, 6-10pm. The folio will be in the MK Gallery throughout the Southern Graphics Council conference.

The exhibition will explore the multi-linear connection of five artists nationwide. I'm proud to be exhibiting alongside Mike Andrews, Trey Gehring, Jovencio de la Paz, and Erin M. Riley.
